Scriptures Read: Job 1: 1-22
Background of Book
*Origins are unknown but there is evidence that Job lived before Moses and the priesthood as he acted as the priest for his family by sacrificing. Also, Job is the first of the Poetic books of the Bible (which also includes Psalm, Proverbs, Song of Solomon) and was written in a Poetic format. My personal opinion is the book was based on the life of Job but written more in a play format/monologue in order to be easily memorized and performed in front of groups.
Verse 1: Job was a Perfect and Upright Man
*Our focus was on the fact that if Job can be perfect and upright then we can also be perfect and upright, With this, we need to establish that the biblical definition of perfection is not what today's world has as its definition. There was only one man without sin and that was Jesus. Perfection in this sense is being blameless. That when you do something wrong, you ask for forgiveness and do what is necessary to make it right. Our study really took a deep look at four attributes we should strive to have in our lives so that we can also live a perfect and upright life like Job did.
Four Attributes
*Giving Up All To Follow God - Matthew 19:16-26
*Having True Spiritual Love for Others - Colossians 3:8-14 - A key to these scriptures is forebearing and forgiving one another. The scriptures teach us that we need to love people even when they are unloveable.
*Controlling The Tongue - James 3:1-10: verse 8 tells us no man can tame the tongue but verse 2 tells us that a person who does not offend is a perfect man. We cannot tame the tongue but we can allow the Holy Spirit to control it. Read Matthew 12:33-37 which states out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.
*Being Obedient to God - 1 John 3:1-6
